Upper Red Canyon Walkabout

It’s about time to get up and get moving, and there is no better place than the Upper Red Canyon Walkabout for a pawtastically good hike with your fur-ever friend. Located in Indio, California, just outside of Palm Springs, this hiking trail offers spectacular scenery for you both to enjoy.

The Walkabout is just that, a fabulous walk which takes you around the area for 8 miles. You can take most any fitness-level pup here as it is rated as easy to moderate. There are a few spots where the route becomes more challenging with a hill or two, but for the most part, every pup will have a great time! Best of all, there is no leash requirement on this hike, however it is important to respect others and to keep your pup under control so that this will continue to remain an off-leash, pup-friendly trek.

Plenty of wildlife can be found in this canyon, which makes for spectacular views and photo opportunities. You will begin your hike at the trailhead which is located next to the General S. Patton Memorial Museum. Restrooms and drinking fountains are located here so be sure to fill up your water bottles before you begin your gentle ascent. 

You will be pleasantly surprised by the windy trail which is known for its narrow sections and amazing views of the Upper Red Canyon. Some areas can require crossing small streams and the paths can be muddy in certain spots, but leaving paw prints is certainly acceptable here! The best times to use this trail are during the fall, winter and spring months because of the uncomfortably high temperatures in the summer.
